Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, often called the “Golden City” (or “Sonar Quila”), is a captivating city situated in the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, India. It’s renowned for its unique yellowish-brown sandstone architecture, which gives the city a golden hue, especially at sunset.
History: Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, a Rajput ruler of the Bhati clan. Legend has it that he chose the site on Trikuta Hill based on a prophecy by Lord Krishna. The city played a significant role in trade routes and faced invasions, notably by Alauddin Khalji in the 13th century. It became a British protectorate in 1818 and joined the state of Rajasthan in 1949.
Key Attractions:
- Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila): A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s few “living forts,” with a significant portion of the city’s population still residing within its walls. It houses the royal palace, ancient Jain temples, and a library.
- Patwon ki Haveli: A cluster of five elaborately carved havelis (mansions), showcasing intricate Rajasthani architecture and craftsmanship.
- Nathmal ki Haveli: A 19th-century haveli known for its unique blend of Islamic and Rajasthani architecture and stunning yellow sandstone work.
- Salim Singh ki Haveli: An antique architectural masterpiece with distinctive features like a peacock-shaped roof and balconies.
- Gadisar Lake: A historic man-made lake constructed in the 14th century for water conservation. It’s surrounded by temples and shrines, offering serene views.
- Bada Bagh: A garden complex featuring royal cenotaphs (chhatris) of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer, providing picturesque sunset views.
- Jain Temples: Located within the Jaisalmer Fort, these intricately carved temples date back to the 12th and 15th centuries.
- Sam Sand Dunes: Located about 45 km from the city, these dunes offer authentic desert experiences like camel and jeep safaris, and stunning sunset and sunrise views.
- Kuldhara Village: An abandoned and supposedly haunted village with intriguing legends, located about 20 km from Jaisalmer.
Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Jaisalmer is during the winter months, from October to March. The weather is pleasant and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from approximately 10°C to 27°C, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities like desert safaris. The famous Jaisalmer Desert Festival usually takes place in February, offering a vibrant cultural experience. Summers (April to June) are extremely hot, with temperatures often reaching 40-50°C, and are generally not recommended for tourists.
