Jaipur
Jaipur, famously known as the “Pink City” due to the distinctive pink hue of its historic buildings, is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan. It’s a vibrant metropolis renowned for its rich history, splendid architecture, bustling bazaars, and status as a major cultural and artistic hub.
History: Jaipur was founded in 1727 AD by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the then ruler of Amber, after whom the city is named. He was a great astronomer and town planner, and Jaipur was one of India’s first planned cities, designed with a grid-like street pattern based on the principles of Vastu Shastra (ancient Indian architectural science). The city was painted pink in 1876 by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II to welcome Edward, Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII), and the tradition has been maintained since, giving it its iconic “Pink City” moniker. Jaipur served as the capital of the princely state of Jaipur until its accession into the Indian Union in 1949 and later became the capital of Rajasthan.
Key Attractions:
- Amber Fort (Amer Fort): A magnificent hill fort located a short distance from the city, Amber Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s known for its artistic Hindu architectural style, including intricate mirror work (Sheesh Mahal), Ganesh Pol, and stunning views of Maota Lake. Elephant rides up to the fort are a popular experience.
- Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds): An iconic five-story palace built in 1799, featuring a unique beehive-like facade with 953 small windows (jharokhas). These windows allowed the royal ladies to observe street festivities without being seen from outside.
- City Palace: A sprawling complex in the heart of Jaipur, blending Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles. It houses museums, courtyards, gardens, and palaces (like Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal), with a section still serving as the residence of the former royal family.
- Jantar Mantar: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is an astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. It features a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments, including the world’s largest stone sundial (Samrat Yantra), that were used for measuring time, predicting eclipses, and tracking celestial bodies.
- Nahargarh Fort: Perched on the Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort offers spectacular panoramic views of the city, especially at sunset. It was primarily built for defense and was also used as a hunting retreat.
- Jaigarh Fort: Located on a hill called Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles), this fort is known for its massive walls, watchtowers, and the world’s largest cannon on wheels, Jaivana. It offers stunning views of Amber Fort and the surrounding landscape.
- Jal Mahal (Water Palace): A beautiful palace seemingly floating in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. While not accessible to the public, its picturesque setting and reflection in the water make it a popular photography spot.
- Albert Hall Museum (Central Museum): The oldest museum in Rajasthan, housed in an exquisite Indo-Saracenic architectural building. It displays a vast collection of artifacts, including paintings, carpets, sculptures, and an Egyptian mummy.
- Bazaars of Jaipur: Jaipur is famous for its vibrant and colorful traditional markets. Johari Bazaar (for jewelry), Bapu Bazaar (for textiles, Mojaris – traditional shoes), Tripolia Bazaar (for lac bangles), and Chandpole Bazaar (for handicrafts and sculptures) are popular for shopping.
Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Jaipur is during the winter months, from October to March. The weather during this period is pleasant and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from approximately 10°C to 28°C, making it perfect for sightseeing, exploring the forts, and enjoying outdoor activities. Summers (April to June) are extremely hot, with temperatures often soaring above 40°C, and are generally not recommended for tourists. The monsoon season (July to September) brings some relief from the heat and paints the landscape green, but can sometimes be humid and affect outdoor plans.
